An AI-assisted application for working through difficult conversations privately: understand both perspectives, find a practical next step, and control exactly what is ever shared.
The problem
Couples, co-parents, roommates, families, and coworkers all hit conversations that go sideways. Talking it through with a generic chatbot means trusting it with very personal material — and sharing with the other person has to be a deliberate choice, never an accident.
Why existing tools fell short
General-purpose AI chat tools aren’t designed around two people, consent, and controlled sharing — anything typed may be treated the same way, and nothing separates “private” from “never shared.”
The solution
OnBetterTerms lets someone work through a difficult conversation privately with an AI guide, understand the other perspective, and arrive at a practical next step. Content has three privacy levels — Shared, Private, and Never shared — and only what the user chooses to share ever reaches the other person.

Engineering involved
Drawn from the product’s own public documentation and trust pages. Only components the product publicly documents are listed.
- Encryption
- AES-256-GCM with a fresh random IV for every record and a subkey derived per column purpose; per-account and per-space keys are wrapped under a master key. The product is explicit that this is not end-to-end encryption.
- Privacy enforcement
- “Never shared” content is kept out by separate code paths and database-level enforcement, backed by an adversarial test suite.
- Authentication
- Sign-in by email link, password, or passkey, with no third-party login; device and session management.
- AI integration
- OpenAI for inference and speech-to-text, plus imports of history from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok exports.
- Data controls
- Account export and deletion controls.
- Mobile
- A companion phone app with push notifications through Expo.
What makes it interesting
Privacy is treated as a data-model problem, not a settings page. Rather than one “private” flag, the three sharing levels are enforced in separate code paths and at the database level, and the product states exactly what its encryption does and doesn’t protect.

Not measured OnBetterTerms is live with a free plan; paid plans aren’t open yet. No usage, revenue, or performance figures have been published, so none are claimed here.
