Monit
Agent-based infrastructure monitoring delivered on a dedicated VM per customer: servers, websites, network flow, and syslog, with dashboards, multi-channel alerting, and public status pages.
The problem
Monitoring is easy to buy and hard to keep useful. Without one place that watches servers, sites, certificates, and network traffic — and alerts the right person — problems surface as customer complaints.
Why existing tools fell short
Shared monitoring services mix many customers’ data on one platform and often need inbound access to client networks; self-run tools need someone to maintain them.
The solution
Monit runs on a dedicated virtual machine for each customer, with a central probe and remote probes at client sites that reach out over HTTPS, so no inbound firewall openings are needed. It collects server, website, SNMP, NetFlow, and syslog data and turns it into dashboards, alerts, and branded status pages.
- Agent-based Linux and Windows server monitoring, plus SNMP
- Website, SSL-expiry, and IP blacklist checks
- NetFlow traffic collection and syslog receiver
- Drag-and-drop dashboards, wallboards, and public status pages
- Alerts by email, SMS, Pushover, Pushbullet, and webhooks with escalation
Engineering involved
Drawn from the public MSP Reboot service page.
- Isolation
- Every customer runs on an isolated virtual machine rather than a shared multi-tenant instance.
- Collection
- A local probe plus remote probes at client sites using outbound-only HTTPS; agents for Linux and Windows servers; SNMP v1/v2c; NetFlow v5; a syslog receiver.
- Alerting
- Email, SMS, Pushover, Pushbullet, and webhooks, with escalation policies.
- Dashboards & reporting
- Drag-and-drop dashboards, fullscreen wallboards, public dashboards, branded client status pages, and 30-day history.
- Hosting & operations
- Provisioned, hosted, and maintained by MSP Reboot.
What makes it interesting
Choosing one VM per customer over a shared multi-tenant service trades some efficiency for strong isolation and simple per-customer maintenance — a deliberate operational decision for monitoring data that often includes internal network details.
