St0r

A modern web interface for UrBackup Server: live job progress, endpoints grouped by customer, file recovery, schedules and retention, offsite replication, and a disk guard that pauses backups before storage fills.

The problem

UrBackup is a capable open-source backup engine, but day-to-day questions — is everything backing up, what failed, can I restore this file, is the offsite copy current — take too many clicks to answer.

Why existing tools fell short

UrBackup’s built-in interface makes everyday checks — what failed, is the offsite copy current, how full is the disk — slower than they should be, and has no customer grouping.

The solution

St0r sits beside UrBackup Server and gives it a clearer interface: live progress, endpoints grouped by customer, file recovery, schedules and retention, offsite replication, and reports. It doesn’t replace the backup engine.

  • Live backup job progress and endpoint status
  • Endpoints grouped by customer, with customer-scoped read-only users
  • File browser recovery and per-endpoint schedules and retention
  • Offsite replication over SSH/rsync with run history and lag
  • Disk guard that pauses backups before the volume fills

Engineering involved

Verified from the public repository: README, dependency manifests, and source files.

Backend
Node.js with Express, helmet, and JWT sessions; bcrypt password hashing and TOTP two-factor.
Front end
React 18 with Vite, Tailwind, and Recharts.
Integration
Integrates three ways: UrBackup’s HTTP API, direct reads of UrBackup’s SQLite databases, and the storage folder itself; St0r’s own data lives in MariaDB.
Authorization
Non-admin users are limited to the endpoints of their assigned customers, and the scope check fails closed.
Automation
Offsite push replication over SSH/rsync with run history and lag tracking.
Security
Stored secrets encrypted with AES-256-GCM.

What makes it interesting

The disk guard is a small piece of operational wisdom turned into code: warning, critical, and emergency thresholds pause backups before the volume can fill, and resume them once space is recovered — preventing the classic silent failure of a full backup disk.

Outcome

Measured Public GitHub figures as of 10 October 2026: 30 stars, 4 forks, and 83 published releases since the repository was created in November 2025. Stars and forks show public interest, not active installations — the project doesn’t collect usage data.

Current status

Open Source Free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted. The source code is public on GitHub.

Open source under the MIT license and actively released. It runs on the same host as UrBackup and manages one UrBackup server.
